Thank You and Good Night

We have decided not to continue with BCGF. We had a great run and thank all of our colleagues for their support.

BCGF 2012 Recap: crowded but good.
Personal highlight (pictured above): Chasing down Art Spiegelman to ask if he is a “real cartoonist”. He gave a polite and straightforward answer saying something like.. cartooning is about communication and too many ‘artists’ these days aren’t trying to communicate anything. “Damien Hirst is a hack”, etc. And I basically agree with that.. but isn’t that always true? Most things straight up suck. ;) Anyway, he went on to say that I obviously consider myself a cartoonist because of how I formatted my most recent mini-comic. A grid. I was like, “I dunno.. I don’t know if that’s what defines comics or cartooning.. I really do feel like art is the highest form of communication and that, by necessity, it should be a variety of things, right?” We smiled then shook hands and parted. It was very amicable. :)
I took one picture the entire day. It’s of Andy Burkholder sitting on top of AD sitting on top of a couch. I’ll keep it private in respect for the parties involved (couch).
I only bought one book. Eye of Horus by Alabaster. The paper felt great. I liked the little characters. Unfortunately, when I got home, I realized it was missing a few pages or had unintentional blank pages? >.< I’ve decided to fill them in myself. I wanted to inspect/purchase more books.. but it was seriously overwhelming. Had to bail.
The second Sonatina anthology was meant to debut at this show but was slightly delayed and I’m thankful. Lost in a sea of stuff. I keep telling myself “just make it good and don’t worry.” So, that’s what I plan on doing.
Oh, and I printed a mini-comic called ‘The Farmboy’ that I’m selling here. $2.
Weekend highlights: Oily preparty. Hanging /w all the good people, good friends, stoop people. Thai food and tostadas to bookend a cartoon party. Buddhist quandaries. Stalking the tiny asians in Book-Off to find the good books. Free MoMA times and the Franz Erhard Walther. Realizing that art is not life and life is not art and it’s very reasonable to want very different things from both. :)

Charles Burns signed my copy of X’ed Out at BCGF. I was overcome with hero worship and nerves so I didn’t get to have a meaningful conversation with him beyond a few cracking some awkward jokes and squirting out “Your work is really inspiring” as I scuttled away. But still, getting to be in a room with people like Charles Burns and Chris Ware and whatnot is definitely the best part of these kinds of events for me. Very humbling/motivating.

Worth reading, especially the end part about Lambé and autobiography. Picked up this book at #bcgf from Frémok.
